Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said 'the Federal Government would do everything in its power to help Australia meet its Kyoto obligations, including setting a target to reduce emissions by 60 per cent on 2000 levels by 2050.' more...The Kyoto Protocol was introduced in 1997. The objective of the international framework is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would reduce future impact on climate change. The protocol has been ratified by 175 countries.
The United States, China and India still have not signed on. They are the #1, #2 and #4 worst polluters (respectively).
A conference opened today in Bali for countries to discuss the next phase of emission targets.
